Inspecting the Mango Farms in Mati, Davao Oriental

Recently, we visited one of the mango farms in Mati, Davao Oriental, which is preparing to supply our next shipment of Philippine Carabao mangoes to Australia. The farm is thriving, with healthy green trees and promising fruit. The harvest is scheduled for 10 July, and the team is confident the mangoes will meet the high standards required for export.

The inspection covered several key areas:

  • Tree health and fruit quality: Ensuring the mangoes are free from pests and diseases.

  • Farm practices: Checking irrigation, pruning, and fertilization methods.

  • Post-harvest facilities: Verifying that sorting, washing, and packing areas meet export requirements.

This hands-on approach helps guarantee that only the best mangoes make it to the next stage of the journey.

The Export Process and Timeline

After the harvest, the mangoes undergo a series of steps before they reach Sydney:

  1. Post-harvest processing

The fruit is sorted by size and quality, washed, and treated to meet export standards.

  2. Export treatment

This includes hot water treatment or other approved methods to eliminate pests.

  3. Documentation

Export permits, phytosanitary certificates, and customs paperwork are prepared.

  4. Airline acceptance

The shipment is booked and accepted by the airline for transport.

If all goes according to plan, the mangoes will arrive at Sydney Airport on 15 July. The exact number of boxes will be confirmed after sorting and packing.

Why Davao Oriental Is Important for Mango Supply

During the rainy season in the Philippines, mango sourcing shifts southward to areas like Davao Oriental. This region has become vital for several reasons:

  • Climate and soil: The tropical climate and fertile soil support the growth of high-quality Carabao mangoes.

  • Experienced growers: Many farmers have adopted export-quality practices, improving fruit size and sweetness.

  • Support from agricultural projects: Past collaborations between Philippine and Australian agricultural agencies helped farmers enhance their techniques and access export markets.

While Guimaras and Zambales are famous for their mangoes, Davao Oriental proves that excellent Carabao mangoes come from multiple provinces. The key is the right combination of variety, soil, climate, and careful farm management.

What Makes Philippine Carabao Mangoes Special

The Carabao mango is known for its:

These qualities depend on careful cultivation and handling from farm to market.

Tips for Enjoying Your Mangoes at Home

Once you receive your shipment, here are some tips to get the most out of your mangoes:

  • Ripen at room temperature if the mangoes are still firm. They will soften and develop more aroma in a few days.

With continued support for farmers and exporters, Australian customers can expect a steady supply of fresh, high-quality Philippine Carabao mangoes even during the rainy season.

This growing partnership benefits both growers and consumers, connecting tropical farms to international tables.
